About Me

I've been a journalist most of my life. I have three decades’ experience reporting national and international news for print and broadcast media. I covered politics, energy, social issues, aviation and the 9/11 terrorist attacks for The Christian Science Monitor. My wide-ranging experience includes a stint on Capitol Hill as then-Senator John Kerry’s national press secretary in the early 1990s and at NBC during the 1996 presidential campaign.
After I left the Monitor in 2010, I wrote a column about the green, cost-effective renovation of Sheep Dog Hollow, an abandoned farmhouse in Connecticut. I now live between Sheep Dog and New York City. I've spent the last three years researching and writing "Ladies of the Empire," an historical novel centered around the epic fight over prostitution at the Empire Theater in London during the 1890's. While writing it, I attended the Yale Writer's Conference three times. In last year's session, I did a novel intensive workshop with John Crowley (author of "Little Big," among many others.)      This March, I went to the Algonkian Pitch Conference and met three editors who have expressed an interest in reading my "Ladies:" Brendan Deneen of McMillan Entertainment, Ibrahim Ahmin of Akashic Books, and Priyanka Krishnan of Ballantine Books. Before I pitch them, I'm trying to land an agent. In the meantime, I have started the AS program for my latest venture, a memoir about living with an Oxycontin-addicted, deeply spiritual and charming alcoholic who owns one of New York City's oldest, iconic bars.
