Food (key lime cheesecake, pineapple sorbet, roast potatoes, Marula Cream, deeply chocolate chocolate ice cream, Southern Comfort and a good South African wine, because, while California is good with the grape, the Cape can't be beat), ballet (I'm a coach and have always been awed by the exquisite lines the human body can make), movies, British TV detective series, Scandinavian thrillers.
I was born and raised in South Africa and have settled in San Francisco with my daughter, who is a fledgling ballerina. I long to spend more time at the sea, in the mountains, by a lake. I miss the South African bush.
I'm interested in wildlife conservation, particularly endangered species, and love elephants. I have an extremely clever Pekingese called Fifi, so yes, I love dogs too. And cats. Horses, cows, pigs, bats. So even if it's a pigeon, I'll talk to it and I have to say, it talks back.
Laughter has often brought me back from the brink--it's best when it comes from deep down, where it's explosive.
I am inspired by the magic realism of the South and Central American writers, the use of language of the Anglo-Indian writers, and the crime novelists of North America, Ireland and Scandinavia.
